Transforming HCI Research in the Philippines Workshop 2026

Welcome to the third CHI MNL Transforming HCI Research in the Philippines Workshop, aka CHIRP 2026.

This is the third CHI MNL Transforming HCI Research in the Philippines Workshop. The goal of this workshop is to establish, invigorate and encourage HCI research in the Philippines by researchers in the Philippines and nearby regions. The workshop also aims to invite international collaborators to conduct research in the Philippines and collaborate with researchers based here. For this year, we discuss themes that discuss implications of AI in the HCI and UX practice in the Philippines.

As part of the PCSC 2026 Conference, the workshop aims to catalyze and advance Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research in the Philippines by fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among researchers and practitioners. By bringing together diverse perspectives and experiences, we aim to explore innovative approaches and solutions to contemporary HCI challenges in the Philippine context. We invite early-career and experienced researchers alike who are interested in conducting HCI research in the Philippines.

Workshop Program

This year, the workshop will welcome two types of contributions: Posters and Position papers. See details below.

Call for Posters

We invite submissions that contribute to the advancement of HCI research in the Philippines. Scientific Papers will be presented as posters during the workshops. Scientific papers are research or projects that are in a mature stage and present a contribution to HCI. They usually present an exploration, an artifact, a survey, a dataset, empirical studies or a combination of any of these. Scientific papers may also be works in progress (WIP), or ongoing research or projects exploring novel interface projects applicable in the Philippine setting, aiming to present preliminary findings and seek feedback for further refinement and development. They are suited for showcasing BSc and MSc students’ work. They may showcase tangible implementations or prototypes of HCI-related technologies or systems, allowing participants to engage directly with the presented concepts, interfaces, or functionalities, fostering hands-on exploration and discussion during the workshop.

Call for Position Papers

We welcome submissions in position papers where prospective authors engage with the intended theme of the workshop. With the integration of AI in the HCI practice, it is important to discuss topics, themes that affect how we teach, research or practice HCI in the Philippines. The workshop aims to encourage dialogue with members of the academia and industry practitioners on the implications of AI in the practice. We are inviting authors to submit position papers which will be presented and will be engaged during the workshop towards a Living HCI curriculum that will be worked on in the coming months.

Guidelines for Authors

Important Dates

  • Deadline for submission of Round 1 papers: March 23, 2026 (Monday, 11:59 PH time)
  • Notification of results from Round 1: March 30, 2026 (Monday, 11:59 PH time)
  • Deadline for submission of Round 2 papers: April 04, 2026 (Saturday, 11:59 PH time)
  • Deadline for camera-ready submission: April 18, 2026 (Saturday, 11:59 PH time)

Paper notifications will be on a rolling basis. Submissions should receive feedback from reviewers/jury members no later than ten days after submission.

Paper Format and Length

  • Posters: 5-6 pages excluding references.
  • Position Papers: 2-4 pages excluding references.

Authors must use the PCSC 2026 Conference Template that is patterned after the ACM Master template. We also prepared an Overleaf template. After clicking the link, choose “copy project” from the Overleaf menu. You need to be registered and logged into Overleaf to be able to do that.

Anonymity

We will adopt a flexible anonymity policy, allowing authors to decide what information to reveal. The CMT submission system will be set to double-blind, meaning reviewers will not see author names unless they are included in the paper. Therefore, authors can choose to disclose their identity in the submitted PDF (resulting in a single-blind review) or keep it anonymous (maintaining a double-blind process).

AI Policy

To ensure the integrity of the scientific record, Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Midjourney) SHALL NOT be listed as authors on any submission. Authors SHALL maintain full accountability for the accuracy, originality, and validity of their work, including any content refined by AI tools. While the use of AI for linguistic polishing and formatting is permitted, the generation of core scientific ideas, data fabrication, and the creation of entire manuscript sections by AI is PROHIBITED. Authors SHALL explicitly disclose the use of any generative AI tools in their submission. Reviewers SHALL NOT upload manuscripts into public AI platforms to preserve confidentiality.

  1. Authorship and Accountability Generative AI tools lack the agency and legal personhood required for authorship. Therefore, AI tools SHALL NOT be listed as an author or co-author on any submission. The human authors listed on the paper SHALL accept full responsibility for the veracity and correctness of all material in their work, including text, code, images, and citations generated or refined by AI. Authors are responsible for verifying that AI outputs do not contain "hallucinations," fabricated citations, or biased content.
  2. Permissible Uses Authors are permitted to use generative AI tools for the following tasks, provided human oversight is maintained:
    1. Linguistic Refinement: Improving grammar, spelling, and readability, particularly for non-native English speakers.
    2. Editing and Formatting: Adjusting the structure or formatting of the author's original text to meet submission standards.
    3. Summarization: Summarizing the author's own notes or data, provided the original context is preserved and verified.
  3. Prohibited Uses To maintain scientific rigor, the following uses are strictly prohibited:
    1. Idea Generation: AI SHALL NOT be the primary source of the work’s core novel ideas or research questions.
    2. Data Fabrication: Authors SHALL NOT use AI to generate synthetic data (e.g., fake survey responses or user study data) unless the research explicitly focuses on the evaluation of synthetic data methodologies and is clearly labeled as such.
    3. Review Generation: Reviewers SHALL NOT use generative AI to write peer reviews or meta-reviews, as this violates the requirement for independent human judgment.
  4. Disclosure Requirements Transparency is mandatory. If generative AI tools were used for any purpose beyond basic spell-checking, authors SHALL include a disclosure statement in the Acknowledgements section or a dedicated "Generative AI Usage" section. This statement SHALL include:
    1. The name and version of the tool used (e.g., "ChatGPT-4").
    2. The specific purpose of its use (e.g., "Used to refine the abstract for clarity").
    3. A confirmation that the authors have verified the output.
  5. Confidentiality and Reviewing Submissions to CHIRP 2026 are confidential documents. Reviewers SHALL NOT upload any portion of a submitted manuscript (including text, figures, or code) into a public generative AI tool. Doing so constitutes a violation of confidentiality and data privacy, as these platforms may store or train on the input data.

Submission Link

Authors may submit their submissions through the Microsoft CMT Link.

The Microsoft CMT service was used for managing the peer-reviewing process for this conference. This service was provided for free by Microsoft and they bore all expenses, including costs for Azure cloud services as well as for software development and support.

Poster Review Process (Refereed)

The CHIRP 2026 Workshop will follow a rigorous and constructive review process. Submissions will be evaluated through a single-round, anonymous review, where reviewers will assess the clarity, originality, relevance, and potential impact of the work especially in the PH setting. Each submission will receive feedback from at least two members of our program committee, aiming to provide authors with insightful and supportive comments. The review process is designed to be mentorship-oriented, encouraging emerging researchers and fostering discussions that refine and strengthen contributions. Final acceptance decisions will consider both reviewer feedback and the workshop’s thematic fit, ensuring a diverse and engaging set of presentations.

Position Paper Review Process (Juried)

Juried content is reviewed by a committee but in a less rigorous process than refereed and does not include an author’s response or conditional acceptance. Juried content is generally not required to make the same level of lasting and significant contribution to our knowledge and understanding as refereed content. Authors who submit to juried tracks may expect to receive light feedback of up to a few paragraphs in length.
